Grief and How It Shows Up in Unexpected Ways

When we think of grief, we often picture mourning after the death of a loved one. But grief is much broader than that—it’s the emotional response to any significant loss or change. And it doesn't always look the way we expect.
At Empowered Perspectives Counseling, we recognize that grief often shows up in ways that surprise people. It can appear as:
Exhaustion or brain fog
Irritability or anger
Difficulty making decisions
Numbness or feeling detached from others
Anxiety or restlessness
Guilt, even when you’ve done nothing wrong
These symptoms can arise after many kinds of loss—a breakup, a health diagnosis, a job change, or even the loss of a dream or a version of your future.
There’s No One “Right Way” to Grieve
Grief is deeply personal. Some people cry often, while others stay busy or feel emotionally flat. Some people feel relief after a loss and then feel guilty about that relief. All of this is normal.
In our work at EPC, we support clients through many forms of grief—whether it's connected to death, trauma, caregiving, or life transitions. There is no timeline or checklist for healing. But there is support, space, and guidance available.
You Don’t Have to Grieve Alone
Grief can feel isolating, especially when others expect you to “move on” before you're ready. In therapy, we create a compassionate space where you can process grief in your own time, make sense of the emotions, and begin to rebuild.
If you're feeling lost, overwhelmed, or unsure of what you’re experiencing—you're not alone. We're here to walk with you, wherever you are in your process.
